Help and useful hints
Search
Sanskrit has to be entered according to the Harvard-Kyoto transcription (see the table below) both when searching for lemmas or for full text. The search modi "exact", "prefix", "infix", "suffix" and "fuzzy" are available. The latter allows for a deviation of one or two letters anywhere in the search term, so that a search for kālatyāga would also find kulayāga. In addition there are two wildcards, "?" for a single arbitrary sign and "*" for any number of arbitrary signs. No accents should be entered and class nasals and anusvāra are regarded equal (that is, both saṃdhi and sandhi are found regardless of the spelling), avagraha is disregarded.
Translations can only be accessed through full text search (please keep in mind that the addenda may also be in German and French). The search can be reduced to specific genres (as Veda, Śāstra or Jaina-Sanskrit), topics (art, society or mathematics), or more specifically to selected texts ("sigla") or references in secondary literature ("reference").
Remarks on the presentation of search results
Homonyms
In case of homonyms verbs come first.
Verbal roots and stems
In the arrangement of homonymous roots and stems the NWS follows the enumeration of the pw.
In search results there are three sections: 1) plain root, 2) roots with prefixes, 3) verbal adjectives. Within each section the following sequence applies: genre, topic, year of publication of the addendum.
Nouns and indeclinables
Accented lemmas are displayed first. Otherwise sorting of entries follows the sequence: genre, topic, year of publication of the addendum. The structure within a single addendum, which is in fact a possibly abbreviated quote, is unchanged.
Full text search
Results are presented in single entries, sorted according to lemmas. Within lemmas the sorting sequence is again: genre, topic, year of publication of the addendum.
Harvard-Kyoto transcription
The table below show the system of transcription used for the NWS. Both the accented unicode character and the Harvard-Kyoto equivalents can be used for searching.
